Black or White

Pick Me
56cm x 77cm
Framed

I painted Iris a couple of months back when I first started painting bigger sizes and this is "Pick Me".

Photo from Mariannes Garden

Just recently my sister's sister in law (wow that is a mouthful) Marianne shared some lovely Iris photos taken in her garden. Though I have not seen her garden in Melbourne for some years I have it on good authority that it is beautiful and full of stunning plants as she is a very keen gardener.
Her photo of a very dark Iris so impressed me I asked her what they were called and when she told me "Witches Sabbath" I thought what a fabulous title for a painting and set about creating  a painting of these dark but colourful blooms.

Now to the reason for my black or white title to my post - I am trying to decide whether to take a leap from my normal matting and framing which my signature style is always simple white frame and soft white double matt and dare to frame this in black as the dark title beckons to be shrouded in black. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Black or White?

  1. Hi Lorraine. Fabulous post and love the iris paintings. As to black or white. On screen I like the black but if I had to live with it in my house I would prefer the white. For me black or dark mounting is too dominating a colour for a wall. It might narrow down your selling audience too but that is just how I think and others may think differently. Good Luck with whichever one you choose.

    1. Again thanks Laura for your continued following and helpful and always nice comments. I am hoping for a consensus on white as I have a spare couple of empty frames already made but would have to buy a black one. the investment if you can call it that in frames has become huge this past year.

  2. Lorraine, I like the white matting. It makes the dark irises stand out more - I think they get overpowered with the black mat. Irises are among my favorite flowers - you did a beautiful job with them.

    1. Terry thanks for this, I will probably try WitchesSabbath in one of my spare frames today and have it on the wall and see if all is happy

  3. Dear Lorraine - happened onto your lovely blog. Your art is truly beautiful. Took some time enjoying a few of your posts. Love the Iris painting - for some reason the dark mat to my eye seems to set it off best. Enjoyed your birds on Yupo paper - I too have done a couple of paintings on this paper - it is fun. So glad to meet you.

  4. Debbie what lovely comments you have left for me to read this morning, I am pleased you have stumbled on my blog and found some paintings you liked. Having a blog to be able to share ones art to people anywhere in the world is so great especially when you get feedback like this

  5. I think in this case I prefer the white although I do like a black mount and frame. I think it can look dramatic bit I think this painting in fact paintings with blue in, for me seem to suit white better. Paintings with more red vibrant colours seem to suit black. As you already have the frame I would stick with it for this one!!! I agree it does cost a lot to buy the frames when you are just starting out, I'm always on the lookout for good quality bargains!

    1. Good point Judith, I have the painting flattening out this morning and will mount this afternoon, I'm sure once it is done I will like it in white and as I move on today to something new I will put the "dark side" behind me LOL
