Catch of the Day

Catch of the Day
Painting size 38cm x 28.5cm

What a busy week, not much painting time whilst our daughter and grandson, 5 month old Thomas stayed for a few days. Such a lovely time but wow I thought painting was tiring. I definitely have forgotten how much energy is required when caring for little ones. This is the only painting I have done and I finished it whilst having Thomas on my lap. He was very interested in all the brushes and especially when I jiggled them in the water. I saw this image sometime ago on Paint My Photo. I used it as a reference but in black and white so I could choose my own colours. I had a very limited palette but I did add some Winsor and Newton Watercolour Iridescent Medium - a bit in with some of the colour washes and then after they were dry, straight from the bottle in places. This photo does not let this glitter effect show up but on the actual painting it gives a good texture for the scales. I would like to try this texture technique again but on some fish that are alive as there is an opportunity to exhibit in May but the exhibition is about "Saving our Gulf" so I don't think dead fish would be appreciated!

  1. Love this! And the shine is just perfect on them. Of course, I'm most in awe of being able to paint with a little one on your lap! ha ha

  2. Thanks Rhonda, having the baby on my lap meant I could not fiddle as I was juggling him and the brush!

  3. I love the shiny stuff you mixed with the paints, it has worked perfect giving it a wet glistening affect on scales that is difficult to portrait

  5. Haven't ever used any of these products but looking at this should have a go!! It has really worked and the composition looks great... as you know I often paint from black and white images as you can then stamp that little bit of you in them... lovely piece Lorraine.

    1. Thanks Judith, yes give this product a go. I have only used it on fish but I am sure it would do well highlighting lots of subject. You are right about using BW images I think I will go this way more when I do use a reference

    1. Your welcome Laura, glad you like this piece. Remembering all the bottles, inks, or whatever would be easier if I planned on using them as not everything is within grabbing distance so they can get forgotten

  8. Oh these colours and textures are lovely. Sounds like you had a fun time with the toddler on your knee too.

  9. Thanks Polly, having Thomas on my knee kept me from being precious and too precise, just dibs and dabs

  11. Glad you like this Barbra, the bottle of medium you add to your watercolour ordinary paints or use it direct from the bottle with a little bit of water on the brush. Have finsihed today some live fish but I think my dead ones look better LOL

  12. Hello Lorraine:) ( My third comment, my internet connection gets lost) You made me laugh with the last line of your post! You can make a card under your painting saying: "this is what happens if we don't save the Gulf".
Bet they like it ! I think you made a beautiful painting and the glitter effect is gorgeous. Very well done!.
