Time for Experimenting

At present I have no deadlines and my next exhibition will be my "open studio" as part of SALA (South Australian Living Artists) which runs the whole of August. I am not under any pressure for this as I have plenty of framed paintings to hang on the walls and time to come up with a few new ones. I am taking this free time to experiment and play and have just tried out adding sumi rice paper for texture and then found it took several layers of watercolour as the paper and perhaps the glue did resist the pigment a bit. I then added some fluid acrylic which obviously stayed on a lot easier but did make the painting a bit heavy looking. Next time I will try watering them down some.  I thought I would post it anyway to show you what I have been playing with and welcome any feedback especially if you have success with adding collage. I have also added another "edibles" this time blackberries to my collection.

  1. I love the colours and textures in your Town Colours painting. Very different to your usual work. It's great to have the luxury of time to experiment. Thanks for sharing these. It reminds me I should take some time out soon too.

    1. Thanks for your feedback Vandy, taking time for experimentation is vital but I am guilty of being too serious sometimes

  2. I just love how you continue to experiment and re-invent, Lorraine. Your creative streak is showing! I wish our friend, Ani Bur, from Create38, could see this - I am sure she could be a good guide with collage. I can offer no suggestions, only to say that I love how it looks.

Your berries pop, especially on such a fine textured background. I always have to remind myself that as we are entering summer here in the States, your warm weather is ending and winter is approaching.

    Happy painting!

  3. Dear Lorraine - this is very cool - reminds me of some of Gerald Brommer's work. Such exciting colors too. Your berries are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I like the texture the collaged rice paper gave to your landscape. I did take a wc/collage workshop once and the instructor had us really water down the glue we used...but it still did resist the watercolor paint a bit. It is great that you are experimenting!!! Can't wait to see more.

  9. Hi, lovely to see you experimenting and both so successful. The berries is my favourite! I don't use acrylics as they dry too quick but you seem to have used them to good advantage in the townscape. Love the texture you have got.

    1. You are right Polly about the acrylics drying time but because this is small and it is just a bit added I managed

  10. Experimenting is always a source of joy! The city is so strong and realistic! The berries are poetic ... Dear lorraine,I wish you happy days of painting with new projects.
Acrylic is a complex world where the understanding of the materials opens up to painters a lot of new possibilities.

  11. Thanks you for your welcomed comments Rita, the town is fictitious but captured from my lovely holiday memories of the country roads of Italy. I am enjoying experimenting after spending 2 solid years practicing just in watercolour

  12. I too have used pure watercolour up until now and am also feeling a similar "urge" to experiment, brought on by watching the Pam Potter demo on my blog and of course seeing Ann at Patchings. Pam used all sorts of mixed media and added paper doillies as collage to create interesting texture, she used charcoal pastel, I think she used Acrylic inks but still produced a lovely vibrant painting. I like the abstract feel to the town... maybe you could do a whole one like that. It still looks like buildings but has an interesting look and of course I love the berries!!

    1. Thanks Judith, experimenting with other media does not detract from watercolours but just boost your technique
