Watercolour on Canvas

I have used watercolour canvas a couple of times this year but have not considered it as a preferred surface because it really is not like painting on paper to me even though the manufacturer says it is. It is almost like using Yupo because adding more paint sometimes lifts off what is underneath and it seems to be so time consuming to end up with layers or tonal variation. I have however completed today this 16" x 20" canvas and have called it finished as I have even given it two coats of matt spray and a coat of satin varnish just so I could stop fiddling.
The subject matter appeals to me immensely as both my husband and I have such great memories of our tour in Italy in 2011 and a highlight was the Amalfi coast.
Since painting my first acrylics back in May of a similar scene called Postcards 11 ,one of 3 large paintings commissioned by my son and daughter in law, I have tried a couple of times to do a similar painting for myself in watercolour on paper. I have not achieved what I wanted so had nothing to lose by trying it on the not so familiar canvas surface. It worked a treat for this type of make it up, wash it off and fix it, busy scene. Not sure I can settle on a title which is really unusual for me as I mostly have my work named within 10 minutes of starting.

  1. I love this Lorraine! The way you've done the whole scene, the buildings along the coast, just perfect. You are so great at experimenting with surfaces and paints.

    1. I love paper best too Joan but I did not have the skill to do this on watercolour paper where the canvas is forgiving and allows for corrections

    2. I have never used canvas for my watercolors but may give it a try since I do often used hot pressed paper. You did a great job. How about "Jewel Of The Mediterranean" for a title? I often get stuck on titles and involve friends and family, who love to come up with titles.

    3. Jean I have never used hot pressed paper does it work best for certain subjects? Thanks for the title suggestion

    4. I think it is either a paper that suits one's style of painting or not. I don't think one can say it works best for certain subjects. I have used it for my glazed paintings and for abstracts. I like the way the paint sits on top of the paper rather than soaking into it. It's fun to try different papers.

  8. Dear Lorraine, you said something very exact about this painting on canvas ... you never stop to be able to change things ... and it seemed to me a wonderful opportunity, but in practice it turned out that way. Your work is loose and lively, and I really like.
For me, the surfaces that allow much afterthought, turned out to be, for now, ways to waste time, without being as constructive as I though ...

    1. Thanks for title tips Liana . I just love Italy and France but it is just so very very far away from Australia and therefore pretty expensive to get there. I do however have so many memories to keep and painting is another way of bringing them back

  11. Hello Lorraine:) I love to paint on cavas (aquaboard). As a matter a fact I'm painting one on it right now! If you know how, it is pretty to handle. I love your Italian landscape. Just as it is! A lot of building along the coast hidden in some mountains. The blue from the water is great against the darker colors. Well done! I love it:)xx
