Not Alone

Not Alone
57cm x 38cm

I didn't think I would already be posting a new painting before the end of the first day of February but I really wanted to share this whilst it is "in the moment". The Adelaide Zoo said farewell yesterday to its Greater Flamingo. It was the last one in Australia and apparently the oldest in the world. He was known to be 83+ as he arrived in Adelaide already mature in 1930. My painting is not a photographic likeness of him but my way of capturing the grace and loveliness of these magnificent birds. I decided to call this one Not Alone as I used the textured background created with cling film to find two more birds.. I came to the studio to play and this is on 1/2 sheet Saunders & Waterford 300 gsm Hot Press Paper. Probably only my second ever hot press painting and I enjoyed using it.

I am also including a collage of the last months challenge paintings.

  3. What? Do you meen that the Flamingo was that old or did I just missunderstand you?! Didnt know they got that old! The painting is lovely. And I do like the two softer Flamingos showing at the back. I have tried cling film too, but don´t think I´m that good at it. But this is nice :) And it´s a beautyful collage you have made! Take care now!

    1. No misunderstanding Catharina, he was that old. Apparently that is a bit unusual.

  4. Congratulations on completing the 30 day challenge, Lorraine. It's quite a feat. I am always amazed at the diversity in the paintings we produce when you look at them all together in a gallery.

Your flamingos are marvellous. I know what you mean about HP paper. I really didn't like working on it at first bit now I love it.

  6. I like the looseness of this to capture the flamingos. I'm sorry to hear he is gone, but I hope he sired a nice new flock during his long life. I like how the paintings look together in the collage! Congrats!!

    1. Thanks Jane, he must have been happy on the most part but he did get attacked by some youths last year who broke into the zoo. Guess like older humans to recover is sometimes too difficult

  9. Lovely, Lorraine. I love your loose use of paint, and the colors are delicious. What a great idea to find two more birds in your abstract background. Flamingos live that long - who knew?

  10. Apparently Terry it is not normal to live that long according to articles I read. He had for the most part a good life

  11. Lorraine - 83 - what an amazing bird. I did not realize they would live that long. As for the painting - it is so lovely. You certainly caught the loveliness of this Flamingo. Glad you are having fun experimenting...looks like Feb. is going to be a very creative month for you!!

  12. I really enjoyed your collage. Your color palette is so easy on the eyes. I like these collages because they really show a trend for each artist. That is something I don't always notice when looking at individual pieces.

    The flamingo is wonderful!

I saw a photograph of geese flying yesterday and it reminded me of you!
