Do Not Disturb

Not much painting in my studio so far this week. Lots of research and collection of inspiration for going forward especially needed for my Wine and Song Series.
Whilst out and about with Camera we found this bee colony which had obviously been there for a few months, busy busy and hanging between some disused wine barrels. I was intrigued with seeing so much bee business this close up and wondered if I could make a painting from my experience. This is it - Watercolour on 300gsm paper, limited palette of Quin Gold, Indigo and Perm Rose. I have included a photo to show you this fabulous find.

Not always Pretty

This painting I have titled "Cellar Door Notes" is now number 5 in my Wine and Song Series. It sat on my easel for the past month as I was not happy with some of the bright colours but had no inspiration to push it further. An artist friend challenged me recently on why my paintings are always "pretty". She paints in Acrylics and Oils with very earthy tones and often with many glazes. Fearing nothing to lose with this as I had it discarded for now I threw my whole arsenal of studio supplies at it. I worked it over with several glazes making greyed down colour and the painting took on a new life. The last element I added was some gold ink which can be read as Gold medals or giant gold grapes! I am really interested in your comments on this one as it is quite different for me so I have little experience to critique it.

Wine and Song IV

When I finish a painting and am happy with it, the latest is always my favourite. This is no exception. It is the fourth in my little Wine and Song Series. It differs from the other three as this is on 300gsm Arches CP paper not a wooden panel so framing under glass is required. I remembered to take a photo very early in the process so you can see how I work to build the finish painting from whatever results from the underpainting. The underlying theme for this work is again linked to my past. Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White was a song I was asked to lay a lot and to include its title with a minor addition the word WINE helped it settle into a wine and song mixed media painting.  The tricky bits came when I hit the collage as watercolour reacts in an unpredictable way depending on what surface it meets. I took my time, stepping back from it often, working out where to go next and I estimate this work took about 12 hours to complete.

Wet into wet background, cling film added.Collage elements added includes: printed tissue paper, highly textured Oguru paper, sheet music, and my first time using Webbing Spray - my work area is now covered in it and not sure whether it is going to come off!

Days of Wine and Roses

The third in my Wine and Song Series. Days of Wine and Roses holds lots of little memorable snippets for me. In my late teens and early twenties I played the Trumpet, had a Cabaret act and this song was one of those I played often. I had a couple starts at creating this work but the painting did not come together as I do not do much planning but build it bit by bit so I washed everything off , covered it with watercolour ground and started again. So pleased I could as this was on a Clayboard Cradled panel and they are not cheap. It includes some of the tissue paper I printed whilst I was waiting for my brick wall episode to end and a piece of database from a sheet music catalog I had compiled whilst working in my retail music business up until 2008. Painting for a series and coming up with a unique work for each one is quite challenging but I love getting lost in the process.
I have also spent some time this week uploading some of my paintings to Redbubble who offer different types of prints on paper and canvas and greeting cards as I know not everyone is in a position to or wants to buy an Original art work. Redbubble prices are most affordable. I believe they print in lots of countries around the world so delivery is cost effective. i.e if you order in Australia delivery comes from Australia. If a work of mine is not included but you would like a print just contact me and I will see if it can be added.

At Last out of the fog...

Pretty Boy
Watercolour 57cm x 38cm
Arches Bright White 300gsm CP Paper
Cannot say for sure as I have only one under my belt but it felt really good to be happy with one of my tries.
This is a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and the inspiration to paint him came after going through photos from a decade ago, happy memories and finding this cute chap. He stopped by frequently on our balcony whilst holidaying on Hamilton Island and my holiday snap also included some pretty bougainvillea. It was fun creating a white bird using soft delicate colour.

Damn the Brick Wall

It has been nearly three weeks since my last post and I still I have nothing to share. I have hit a brick wall and hit it hard. Each morning I say this is the day I am healed but its not happened yet. Maybe by writing this down it will help shake it off. My solitary and obsessive life in my studio is obviously the culprit and I know I need to mix life up a bit or this will happen every few months. I do have a well tidied studio and have created some nice tissue papers using prints of my original watercolours for later collage use.
Glad this Sunday is Mothers Day and I get to spend time again with my family.
This photo is of my collection of watercolours. My studio is filled with lots of lovely art materials so after writing this I am off to play.
