Endless Emu

The quirky faces of the Australian Emu draw me in every time. Basically when I see them in the wild or in parks they really can all look the same excepting for their wild hair do's.
The Australian landscape is incredibly varied and so with just a few photos of emu faces, side on, full on etc, there are endless possibilities to compose a painting by changing these around and depicting their location with colour and texture. I have painted a few single emu and following the sale of one last week and the suggestion that a multiple emu work may be of interest to my client I bought the idea of this from further down my "to do" list, to the top.
Errol, Ed and Ezmerelda  in Flinders Ranges colours didn't make it to the gallery wall as it was snapped up by a studio visitor as soon as it was off the easel early this week.  I have just framed Flossie, Fred and Fitzy who are blending with the colours of the Red Centre which may suit my emu collector, if not I will happily choose a new palette, new hair do's, new landscape and do another,

Not all Negative

This weeks class was all about creating something using negative painting. I showed them my recently painted works using shells and pebbles to demonstrate what we were trying to achieve.
Firstly we did a great little exercise using circles and 5 layers so that they could firstly get their heads around this funny notion of painting without actually painting the subject but around it. I explained that all painting has elements of positive and negative painting but we were going to paint a work that was negative work until the finishing step when some details could be added to the subject. They then chose from my prop collection of  various types of leaves, pebbles, and shells to start their unique work and took it home to complete. I am looking forward to seeing these next week.

Texture First

I have just had my class here on Tuesday for Week 5 in their 8 week watercolour course. In week 4, I demonstrated how to add texture using cling film and their homework was do a clingfilm texture background and bring along a couple this week so that we could paint something on top. It is a great exercise in some negative painting and also using your imagination to work with the texture results, choosing a subject that will work . I did my homework too before we had a few days away by preparing a soft background. I was quite excited with the texture created and wanted to finish the work immediately but I resisted and left it for the class. In the end I didn't get to paint my flower subject during class as it really was busy getting to everyone when each student had prepared something really unique and also the 6 students all chose a different subject for on top.
I finished mine in the afternoon when they left.
Below are paintings that did get completed by the end of the class. Others took theirs home to work on. Both of these are on practise paper, still 300gsm  but not cotton rag. I think the results are rather good. Next week we tackle an entirely Negative painting.
